Great pants but the sizing is large M is like a 12-14

Good quality short, but sizing way off! i am a small size 8, bought a size XS and were way too big for me. Had to send back, such a shame as were really nice shorts.

A description of the top of these shorts would be helpful.Can anyone help there? Is it a button and zip, an elasticised waistband..a bit of both?
